Our Story

The Sonic Kitchen came to be in 2016.
At the time there was a huge gap in STEM providers for the Early Learning Industry.
While most providers did the traditional “I speak and demonstrate, you listen” format, instead we develop STEAM education with a difference.
Focusing on giving the children new concepts, key words, control, and meaningful experiences.
The kind of events they remember.

Meet Mr Jeremy

Jeremy is the owner of The Sonic Kitchen.
His background spans across many learning areas.
Sound engineer, Physics presenter, Inventor, Computer Programming, Electronics just to name a few.

“I was originally a sound designer/sound engineer.
My big passion was music, and for many years i was in the media business. I was involved with sound production since 2007, recording albums in Australia and the U.S.A. During this time I provided sound design for pop artists. I also worked at a sound production company that exposed me to places such as The Sydney Opera House and Fox Studios. Now i am in the education industry and loving it!

The simple truth is – I love learning!
Looking back on my education and experience,
my key take away is everything is connected.
It is the principle that affects all that I create, say and do. And since a goal of learning is to make connections and form meaning, this idea of everything being connected brings great value to our learners.

The Sonic Kitchen has been a complete surprise to me!
The fact that so many learning centres have embraced these ideas is truly amazing, and it is so encouraging!
And knowing that The Sonic Kitchen has a positive impact in the lives of the children, the teachers, and the families inspires me every day.

This has allowed me to invent some special technologies, broaden my scope of learning, and truly make a difference.
When i see children investigate and pursuing knowledge this gives me such an emotional kick!”

Outside of the education industry, The Sonic Kitchen has also lead me to work with the ABC on their show called Catalyst for an episode all about the physics of sound!
I have been teaching children about the weird world of music technology and physics for almost 10 years, and i still enjoy sharing my knowledge, skills, and experience with children – thank you!

What We Do

The Sonic Kitchen provides interactive STEAM education/STEAM incursions for children aged 0-12yrs in the Sydney area.
This includes presentations, workshops, and technology environments.

Learn BIG, Learn LOUD!  is our motto.
We explore sound and other aspects of physics with a view of applying that knowledge in the real world.
Ranging from sound design to science experiments where kids actually see sound!
This is what The Sonic Kitchen does, “we make things with sound”.
In addition to sound, we also explore electricity, electronics, light & colour, digital arts, air pressure, and magnetism.

When first starting The Sonic Kitchen our early learning consultant advised us not to make lessons that are “dumb-dumb”.
What she meant was, speak in clear terms but don’t  dumb down the communication.
Children have a great gift of boiling down complex concepts into a simple piece of knowledge, we love that.
So we don’t water-down the knowledge, instead we boil it down to the principle idea.
This is the impression the children take away, something clear, exciting, and meaningful.

Communication style

Our communication style is energetic!
We view the element of surprise as a spark.
This spark inspires curiosity.
Curiosity and resources give control.
Control gives confidence.
An other major tool we use is repetition for reinforcement.
Linking a new word with an object or action, then repeating those key words at the
right time solidifies the concept.
The outcome is a child who has mad a new meaningful connection!

Impact

The goal of any lesson we provide is to ensure the child leaves the lesson with something new.

  1. New concepts
  2. New words for their vocabulary
  3. New objects
  4. New actions
  5. New surprises
  6. New experiences

When something is new and interactive, there is a greater likelihood of memory retention so the information presented now lives inside of the child.
The other impact that is often seen is the impact on families.
Since the child goes home charged with new knowledge, they want to talk about it!
We get feedback from parents saying “The Sonic Kitchen day is my Childs favourite day!”
Or, “when we have dinner we talk about the new ideas that my child has learned, it becomes a family discussion!”.

Above all, we associate positive feelings with learning!
